Daily Check-In Alternative

A daily check-in without making your parent reply every day.

Daily check-ins can work well. They can also become another job for the parent, the family, or both. Puffin Guard is for families who want to close the time gap without turning every day into a yes-I-am-okay message.

The Problem

The gap before care becomes necessary.

Calls, texts, and apps all depend on someone replying. That is fine until the phone is flat, ignored, out of reach, or the person simply gets tired of checking in.

The Safety Net

A backup that does not change daily life.

Puffin Guard watches for expected movement at home instead. If normal movement is missing for longer than expected, it contacts the person first, then alerts trusted contacts if there is no response.

The Shift

From daily replies to the time gap

Daily replies work until they become the work.

A morning text is simple. A missed text is not. Someone has to decide whether to wait, call again, message a neighbour, or start worrying.

The real question is not whether they replied.

The more useful question is whether normal movement has stopped for too long. That is the time gap most families are trying to close.

A passive check-in can stay out of daily life.

Puffin Guard does not ask your parent to press a button, open an app, wear a device, or report what they are doing.

Options Compared

Different ways to close the gap

No option is perfect. The right choice depends on what your parent accepts and how quickly someone needs to know.

Option Useful for The gap to check
Daily calls A parent who likes the routine and wants the contact. Both people have to keep doing it, and a missed call can create uncertainty quickly.
Text check-ins A simple daily yes-I-am-okay habit. They still require a reply, a charged phone, and someone watching for missed responses.
Check-in apps People who are comfortable with smartphones and app routines. The app only works if the person accepts the habit and keeps using the phone.
Watches and pendants Faster help when they are worn, charged, and within reach. They can be off, charging, forgotten, refused, or not triggered by every problem.
Cameras Situations where visual confirmation is acceptable and needed. Many capable people do not want cameras in their home.
Puffin Guard A quiet backup when normal movement has not happened for longer than expected. It is not instant fall detection or emergency response.

Alert Flow

Quiet when life looks normal. Loud when someone should check.

Puffin Guard is not a live activity feed. It waits for the expected check-in window, gives your loved one a chance to respond, then escalates to the people they chose.

Everyday movement

The sensor notices normal movement in a hallway, living room, or kitchen. No cameras, microphones, or wearable devices.

Scheduled check-in

Most of the time it sleeps. On the chosen schedule, usually daily, it connects over WiFi and sends the latest check-in.

Person first

If expected movement is missing, Puffin Guard sends an SMS and makes a phone call. If they check in, everything resets silently.

Trusted contacts

If they cannot respond within the grace period, family, friends, neighbours, or carers are alerted by SMS, email, and phone call.

Is It Right?

Built for capable people who want a backup, not monitoring.

Puffin Guard sits in the gap between doing nothing and full care. It is for families who want someone to know if normal daily movement stops, without making home feel watched.

Good fit

  • Your parent or loved one is still capable and living independently.
  • They do not want cameras, microphones, wearables, or daily reporting.
  • You want a quiet safety net in case they do not wake up, have a fall, or cannot reach their phone.
  • They already have a fall watch or pendant, but sometimes forget to wear it or charge it.
  • You want family or trusted contacts notified, not automatic emergency services.

Not the right only solution

  • They need immediate fall detection or urgent emergency response.
  • They need 24/7 professional monitoring or clinical care.
  • The home has no reliable WiFi or trusted contacts who can respond.
  • You need live activity tracking, room-by-room reports, or a camera feed.
  • They are not aware of, or do not consent to, having the sensor in their home.
